Reducing Polarization through Generative AI

Overview: In an effort to address growing societal divisions, we conducted studies on how AI-powered conversational agents can reduce political polarization and promote empathy in discussions about controversial topics. Our results show that conversational agents powered by Generative AI significantly improved understanding and reduced the hostility typically associated with these discussions.

Key Insights: These findings open new doors for using AI in public policy, civic education, and social media moderation. However, they also highlight the complexities of designing AI systems that are both neutral and effective in sensitive societal issues.
